Photography by Kyriaki Mouratidis

I was born in Shikoku, Japan, surrounded by the quiet coastal landscapes of the Seto Inland Sea. From an early age, I was immersed in Japanese aesthetics through calligraphy, tea ceremony, and kimono. Through these practices, I developed a sensitivity to line, negative space, stillness, and subtle tonal shifts — elements that continue to shape my photographic work today.
During my years working internationally, I became fascinated by the way Japanese aesthetics — such as light filtering through shoji screens — blended with contemporary spaces across different cultures. Photography began as a quiet way for me to document those encounters and atmospheres.
While spending time along the coastline of South Australia, I began to see the traces left by the tides as brushstrokes, reminiscent of ink softly bleeding across washi paper and the layered textures of dyed and woven kimono fabrics. Over time, this resonance between the Australian landscape and Japanese visual sensibilities led me to pursue photography more deeply as an artistic practice, with hanging scrolls allowing each work to breathe beyond the image itself.
